The Man in the Hat

The years and miles
have made him

nearly impossible
to understand.

The waitress brings him
scrambled eggs and toast.

He tries to tell me
about a statue

of his wife and a war
and a giant turnip

that he either ate
after nearly starving to death

or wore as a hat
to his sister's wedding.
